I used to think it wasn’t a big accomplishment t I used to think it wasn’t a big accomplishment that I graduated university. The fact that I graduated medical school was just an extension of that. It wasn’t until I was talking to someone who told me that the percentage of people who graduated university in their country was 4%. I was curious what the stats were for Canada. I was surprised to see that in Canada just over 30% of the population has a university degree! What was even more surprising was that it was number one in the world! This means that out of every three people, two DIDN’T go to university. The point isn't university vs not. The point is: why did it seem to me like everyone and their mother went to university? Because that’s who my friends were. Growing up, my friends also had the same goals of going to university. Later, I just happened to have a lot of friends from university or friends that I met at work who had needed a university degree for that job. So it seemed so normal to me. When in fact, it was a rarity. The same thing happens in business. Or any life goal we’re trying to achieve. It was when I surrounded myself with other women who were working towards building their dream business. When I worked with coaches and mentors who had achieved what I was striving to achieve, that I saw my biggest breakthroughs. 💪 That’s when I was most inspired. When I was signing the most clients. When I had so many content ideas, they were poring out of my fingertips! Until that becomes your normal. And you can’t imagine going back to living and thinking any other way. ✨ Here’s the key to remember: When we surround ourselves with people who have the same goals or people who have already achieved them, it increases our chances that we will achieve them too. Because that’s our normal. It’s what we talk about. It’s the decisions we make. It’s the things we read and the ideas we share. Don’t underestimate the power of who you surround yourself with. Sonja
Fortune is in… the story. I love a good story! Fortune is in… the story. I love a good story! Chances are, so do you. Think of your favourite books. It’s always a main character going through something awful, only to decide to make a change. But then she goes on an insane adventure! Full of ups & downs, grave peril, she almost falls off a cliff many times!!! Only to finally become victorious in the end!🎉 Sign me up, I’d read that story any day. What’s interesting, so would most of us. So it’s hardly surprising that one of my most successful posts is really a story. A story of me before I started my business. Showing my life at a 9-5 in Toronto, when I was distracting myself from work & how unhappy I was by binging Netflix & chocolate, wondering if this was it for the rest of my life. When I was constantly worrying, doubting if I could succeed, thinking about what everyone else thinks. Thinking small, playing small, & constantly sabotaging. To investing in mentors, developing a money mindset for success & growth. Doing the hard work to deal with negative thought patterns. Taking risks! Failing. Learning & getting back up! Dealing with self-sabotage once and for all! All so that in the end, I could make an income doing what I love! Make an impact in the world! Travel the world! Help other women do the same! AND be genuinely excited to create the rest of my life how I WANT! As I read this, all I can think is YES, YES, YES! It’s exciting! The hero was in the depths of misery! But she rose up, decided to do the work to turn her life around! It wasn’t easy! She fell down so many times. But she got up every time! And in the end, she got the life she always dreamed of! We love these stories, because they allow us to see & believe in what’s possible. Now, what about you? What’s your story? We all have one. Think about where you started. Why did you decide to make a change? How did you change it? Remember the more struggle there was – the better adventure story it is!! Finally, what was the result? And was it worth it? Social is meant to be social. If someone tapped you on the shoulder at a coffee shop, you wouldn’t just look past them, You’d probably say hi! So 1️⃣st step say hi to your followers! Tell them you appreciate them following you! 2️⃣nd step: Look at this as a first date. Would you sit there ignoring the person? Or would you ask a few questions to get to know them? Exactly! Remember, that new follower is there because you have something of value to them. Find out how you can be most helpful. Do you have a freebie you could offer them? A helpful piece of advice? To HOW you can help, you have to learn more about them. Ask a few questions like how long have you been doing this, what have you tried, by when do you want to figure this out? Why? 3️⃣rd step: Okay someone walks up to you on the street & says, “I’m a tourist, I’m so confused, I’m looking for the train station. I have to get there in the next half hour or I’ll miss my train to my sister’s wedding!” You know where the train station is. You know how to get there in 10 mins. What do you? Exactly! BE KIND & USEFUL! If you see you can help this new follower – tell them! Offer them your freebie, a spot in your upcoming event, a call to chat more about what they’re going through & WHETHER you could fully help. They might accept, they might not, but you did your part by offering your help! The reason we look at convo’s in the DMs as icky is when they’re done in an icky way! But when we do them like this: as meeting a new friend, going out on that first date, & genuinely helping if we can… those are the amazing conversations I want to have! Try this for a week! And see how many conversations you have & how many calls you get on! Make sure to save this to remind yourself of the steps as you do this. No more shopping around for authenticity: Here’s No more shopping around for authenticity: Here’s what happened when I stopped “shopping around” what other coaches are doing & identified with my authentic brand “Oo maybe I should make my content pink! Or orange Or I should dance Or I should wear leopard!! Because that super successful coach is doing it. And she has tons of followers.” Sound familiar? Well I never went so far as to wear leopard print, but I am guilty of tons of shopping around! Why? 1. Because I didn’t know who that authentic self was 2. I thought that those other coaches’ successes were because of all those things – the pink, & orange, & dancing. And in PART I was right. Here’s the truth of the situation: The pink and the orange & leopard works for those coaches because it is their authentic self. When we see a coach who is their authentic self, it just matches. The pink fits, the leopard fits, the dancing FITS. And we LOVE IT! But no matter how many affirmations I do, how much confidence I try to portray, leopard prints would look ridiculous on me. And people visiting my profile wouldn’t know why, but they would sense something is not right. Our potential clients CAN TELL. And you know what, that’s how you can tell as well: If it just feels off, that’s not you. If you don’t feel incredible, that’s not you. If you DO look at it & your heart does a little jump of joy, THAT’S YOUR AUTHENTIC YOU! I’m not pink, or beige, or orange, or leopard, or dancing. I’m much more of a navy blazer, palazzo pants, & massive sunglasses kind of woman. Put that on & I feel like I could take on the world – no affirmations necessary! Now that's the energy I want to show up with on Instagram, all social media, & for potential and actual clients! And this only comes from knowing your authentic self. And you know what happened when I figured this out & started showing up ONLY as my authentic self: My engagement sky rocketed I hired out more help My DMs blew up Showing up became so much more FUN! “You’re leaving medicine to do what?!” is a “You’re leaving medicine to do what?!” is a pretty standard reply I got when I told people I was leaving medicine to build a coaching business. The thing was… I knew where they were coming from… because it was the same question I was asking myself when I was thinking about leaving a stable 9-5 to pursue my passion. I was thinking: Is this just a crazy idea? Am I being childish and irresponsible? Maybe I should just stick it out since I’ve already put so much time into getting here? Do you even know anything about building a business?? What if it fails I don’t even know if I have time NOW But the thing was.. I remember dreading Sunday’s because Monday was coming up Feeling unfulfilled and thinking that I could be doing so much more Counting down the hours until I could go home and the days until the weekend Feeling disappointed because I had such high hopes for it Not having any control over my own schedule and time and how I spend it Sound familiar? I knew that I couldn’t spend the rest of my life like this. So I took the leap to pursue my passion of creating a coaching business. I hired a business coach and plunged into the deep end! And frankly it was the best decision I ever made. PERIOD. Yes, it was hard – harder than medicine for me in fact. Yes, people were confused and talked about my transition. Yes, I struggled with my own doubts and fears. Yes, I failed over and over. But also… 💫Now I spend each day excited to get to work. 💫I feel fulfilled knowing I can help amazing women step into their power and build their own dream business – so they can get unstuck from their 9-5. 💫I have flexibility and I organize my time how I want! #timeandlocationfreedom 💫I'm genuinely happy. You never know the effect your courageous act is g You never know the effect your courageous act is going to have on someone… had I known this earlier, things would have been so different! When I was still in corporate, dreaming about leaving & creating a coaching business, I was terrified. I thought: well this is what I went to school for. This is what everyone expects me to do. isn’t this daily grind just what being an adult is? Shouldn’t I just suck it up & stick with it? All of this made me feel so paralyzed to take action. I procrastinated, over-researched, & I wasn’t fully in it Yet I really couldn’t get rid of that nagging feeling that I was meant for more. That life is meant to be enjoyed. That I could be waking up every day excited to jump up out of bed! It took literally all my courage to leave corporate – leave that “safety” net – & go off on my own to pursue my passion for coaching. Going against the grain and what “everyone” is doing felt so forbidden! But as time went by, I started getting people coming up to me and saying: Wow that is amazing, that has really inspired me to work on my own passions. I didn’t know you could live like a digital nomad. I didn’t know I could leave corporate and pursue something that I’m passionate about. The thing is: we don’t know what other people are going through. The person who is always happy, may be hating every morning she wakes up because she knows she is meant for more. The person who's chill could frustrated because they want to start that business, but they don’t know how to start. But when we have the courage to live our own lives authentic to our true selves, that sends a ripple effect out.. It gives others the encouragement, inspiration, & permission that they too can live a life where they are happy, excited, & doing what sets their heart on fire So remember that when you’re deciding to do the amazing task of making your passion a reality, you’re not just doing it for yourself… you’re doing it for all the people whose lives you’re going to change just because of your brave decision to take action to make your passion a reality! -Sonja Know someone who needs to hear this today? The answer to: “What if I don’t know enough?” I’ve heard this worry so many times from my clients before they start working with me. I’ve even said it when I was starting my own coaching business! I would wonder whether I knew enough to get clients. Whether I knew enough to help my clients. Whether I knew enough to build the type of freedom business I wanted. You know the problem with this thinking though? It kept me in cycles of research & learning… And research & learning is great… But if it’s not coupled with action, it’s pretty useless… Research & learning makes us feel safe It lulls us into a sense of progress Especially if, like me, you spent so long in school! It feels safe. It feels familiar. And you know what else? It is never-ending… When we’re constantly wondering “What if I don’t know ENOUGH?” We are constantly trying to reach that “enough” And the “enough” finish line just keeps moving farther away the more we learn There will always be more to learn. And time was passing by… I was still at a 9-5 that was making me miserable – & overweight, anxious, & depressed. Still not doing what makes me happy & passionate Still banging my head on the wall wondering why it’s not happening Eventually, it’s time to either put the book, webinar, podcast, etc down & start taking action. That’s what created the shift from: I don’t know enough 👉 how can I take action on what I know? I don’t know enough 👉 how can I make it happen for me? I don’t know enough 👉 what can I do to make more progress in my business? That’s why in Femmepreneur Academy we start implementing & taking action from day ONE. Learn & take action at the same time! Sounds scary, sounds intense. Not really. When we have a support system, we know exactly what we need to be doing every step of the way. Because here’s the key to remember if you want to have a booked-out with clients business: You may never feel like you know “enough.” There is always more to learn. For a long time I tolerated... I’m taking a cou For a long time I tolerated... I’m taking a course right now & learned something so valuable I have to share it with you all! This lesson can apply to any area of our life. Whether it’s our relationships, wealth, health, or the business we’re trying to build. Here’s the big lesson: We get not what we dream of. We get what we are willing to tolerate. If we’re willing to tolerate feeling unwell because we keep eating unhealthy food, we continue to feel unwell. If we’re willing to tolerate not having 💰, we’ll continue not having any. I realized, it’s the same with business. I tolerated not knowing how to get clients, feeling down about my results, doubting whether I had what it takes. The biggest change happened when I refused to tolerate any of these things anymore. And that's when the actions started happening! Like figuring out how to work with my 1st business coach. Taking action to change my mindset to WHATEVER it needed to become to succeed. To do the work every day to BECOME that version of me! It’s when we refuse to tolerate a situation any longer that we are able to have the strength to the things that seems so scary just yesterday. If we refuse to tolerate not getting clients anymore, we’ll do whatever it takes to learn how to do it. If we refuse to tolerate not getting on discovery calls, we’ll do whatever is necessary to get on more sales calls. No matter how uncomfortable, no matter what we have to move, rearrange, borrow, to make it happen. So think about your business right now… what’s something that you’ve really wanted to change. Maybe it’s getting your first client. Maybe it’s figuring out how to get consistent monthly clients. Maybe it’s being able to get more time & location freedom from your business. First, ask yourself, do you really want this? Like truly, do you want to make this happen? If you do, then ask yourself: What are you no longer willing to tolerate to make it happen? Shortcut to valuable lessons I learned from failur Shortcut to valuable lessons I learned from failures Oh when I think of 2020 Sonja. She was so excited, so determined, so naïve. She was going to make her business a success, except she really had no idea of how to go about it. There was much information out there that I didn’t know where to start from! So I started doing a bit of everything, posting on all these different platforms, building a website, interacting in Facebook groups, picking my brand colours. And none of it got me any clients. I had to go through A LOT before I started getting any clients. A LOT. Hearing no after no on sales calls, having 1 person or no one show up on my lives, creating content I cringe at now, getting stranded in Vietnam, and trial and error. So much trial and error to learn the system I use now and the one I teach to my clients. The system I love to wake up and do every day! Sometimes when I look back at all these crazy moments, moments where I doubted whether I had what it takes, moments where I fell flat on my face and wanted to hide under the covers, I sometimes smile at the memories. But most of the time, I wish it could have been a bittttt easier! So check out the carousel for the biggest lessons learned from many mistakes and failures that I wish I could tell my 2020 self. Just like many lessons in life, these can be a “When you know, you know” type of situation. Even if I had read these in 2020, I don’t know if I would have understood the value of them. Kobe, Djokovic, Ronaldo all talk about the importance of mastering the mental game. It’s the same in business. Without mastering the mental game, I never would have been in business long enough to master the business game. And this was especially true for me because I had spent so long in school – graduated medical school at 28! School teaches us a different set of skills. AMAZING if we’re going to be employees. It’s not about where you are now. It’s about… Not letting where you are now limit where you can go Before I got on my first sales call, I had never done a sales call before. Before I got my first client, I had never signed on a client. Before I made my first 10k month, I had never earned that much in a month before. But all those successes didn’t just happen because I really wanted them. They were built on the shoulders of: • Cold sweating during my first sales call • Countless hours listening to my sales calls and refining my sales strategy • Mental work with coaches and therapists to create a new identity for myself • Investments into coaches to guide me to develop key business skills • Hours of doubts and even more hours working through them • Confronting long standing fears like imposter syndrome and fear of failure It could have been so easy for me to look at my where I was: a medical school graduate who was trying to build a coaching business but it just wasn’t working… And to think, “See it’s just not meant for me. I’m just not a business person.” And that could have been true. But then I realized that before I graduated medical school, I had never done that before either. And I certainly didn’t expect to be able to do it during my first day, week, or even year of med school. So why should business be any different? Once I realized that I needed to do the work to master key business and mental skills…everything changed! It became easier to show up, my confidence grew, my determination soared. And doing the work allowed me to start getting results…First discovery calls, then booking clients, then payments, then 10k months. And that’s how I learned a valuable lesson: Focus on the work. Relentlessly pursue getting better. Do what you have to do to learn the skills and lesson you need to learn. And the results will take care of themselves. Turning no’s into yes’s starts with one thing. Turning no’s into yes’s starts with one thing... When I was starting I got on 14 sales calls in a row. And heard 14 no’s. One after the other. It was hard. Who likes rejection, right? But it was more than the rejection. Each no felt like my dream of making an impact was slipping away. That the life of freedom I wanted was slipping away. And that little voice that was terrified of failure was saying, “See, I knew you couldn’t do it.” And I had a choice. I could either listen to the voice, or I could do something about it. And I was really close to giving up a few times. But here’s what I did instead. I learned from the no’s. I hired another coach to teach me more about sales. But then I did something more important: I took responsibility for my results. I listened to each sales call I did. Examined it. Learned more about sales strategy and sales psychology. I got feedback from my coach, tried again, practised, role played it. And eventually those no’s started turning into yes’s. Because that’s the thing that happens when we decide to take responsibility for our results. We learn the best way to get the best results, we become more resilient, and we’re able to start living the life we’ve always wanted. Like leaving Toronto, travelling all over the world with my partner, taking time off to spend with family, and planning my time exactly how I WANT! Sonja Is this what you want for yourself too? Can't believe it was just a couple years ago! I Can't believe it was just a couple years ago!
